Introduction

Carbon neutrality are attracting more and more attention because of the global energy crisis and environmental pollution for inordinate consumption of fossil fuels. The large-scale utilization of renewable energy, such as solar, wind, geothermal, ocean energy, etc., strongly depends on the functional interfaces and devices. However, the functional interfaces and devices for carbon emission reduction are multidimensional with ultra-small feature size (nm) but large applicable area (m), ultrahigh precision, complex geometry and high performance. Thus, the integration of functional materials and advanced manufacturing approaches are in urgent need for the fast development of carbon neutral functional interfaces and devices.

The aim of this special issue is to provide a forum to review cutting-edge manufacturing technologies in functional interfaces and devices for carbon neutrality. Original work on new materials, new structure design, new applications and novel manufacturing approaches of functional interfaces and devices for renewable energy and energy storage; smart energy systems; carbon capture, utilization and storage are also strongly encouraged.

Possible topics, within this scope, include but are not limited to:

  •    Micro/nano-fabrication of functional interfaces and devices

  •    Multiscale fabrication based on 3D printing techniques

  •    3D printing of metamaterials

  •    3D/4D microstructures for functional interfaces and devices

  •    Functional surfaces and membranes for clean energy utilization and storage

  •    Integrated smart energy devices and systems

  •    Functional materials for low-carbon devices

  •    Applications of functional interfaces and devices for carbon neutrality
